Michelle Poler

Conqueror of Fears

Speaker / Youtuber

Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela to a family of holocaust survivors, Michelle Poler was accustomed to living with fear. In an effort to re-write her definition of fear, Michelle completed a project where she faced 100 fears in 100 days. At around day 40, the project was picked up by the media becoming a viral phenomenon.

Facing her fears took Michelle to the TEDxHouston stage where she completed her 100th challenge. This helped her turn a personal project into a global movement, allowing her to quit her job and inspire others to go after their fears as her new calling.

She now tours the world speaking at companies, schools and organizations teaching audiences how to step outside their comfort zones as a way to tap into their full potential. Michelle also founded the Medium publication Hello Fears and posts weekly videos on Youtube where she speaks to her younger self about living courageously.

100% Human t-shirt

When I started speaking at companies, events and schools about my project, 100 Days Without Fear, and the lessons I learned along the way, I started to get the same comment from the audience, over and over again, “You are such a real person.” The first time I laughed, what kind of compliment is that? But I kept hearing it over and over. Now I realized that my most popular trait is how relatable I am. People are used to admire speakers because of their achievements, bravery, resilience, but they rarely can see themselves in that person.

With me, the feeling they get is “if she did it, I can do it too.” So when I saw Everlane (my favorite clothing brand) was selling these t-shirts to help raise funds for ACLU, I had to get one for myself. I’m just as human as anyone else, the fact that I’m on a stage and you are in the audience doesn’t mean I’m more capable or superior in any way. If I faced 100 fears, anyone can.

Warby Parker glasses

DSC06813

Growing up I was extremely embarrassed to wear glasses. I started wearing them when I was 6 or 7 years old and it really hurt my self esteem, I lost all my confidence, until I discovered contact lenses. Now, at 28 years old, I decided I wanted to stop hiding the fact that I need glasses to see from afar. It is part of who I am and now I made them part of my brand. You will never see me without my glasses, I wear them with pride and they are a big part of who I have become after I decided to face my fears.

Compendium Motto journals

DSC06823

I bought my first journal weeks before I started my project. I knew I was going to start a 100-day project but I had no idea what it was going to be about. The journal said “Find Your Happy” and I was determined to commit to a project that was going to help me find my happiness. And it did. When the 100-day project ended, I had already filled every page of that journal, and I needed a new one. This time I chose the one that said “Live A Life You Love” because I was struggling with the challenge of turning a personal project into a lifestyle. When I discovered that I could make a living by inspiring audiences I bought my next journal with the words “Live your wild dreams” and now, I just started my 4th one which says “Make Mistakes” because my 2017 resolution is to [attempt to] fail.

Youtube Placque

DSC06860

Thanks to Youtube I am where I am today. In 2015 I created my channel Hello Fears – it used to be called 100 Days Without Fear – and I started posting one video a day. Around day 40, my project got the media’s attention allowing me to share my story in publications like CNN, HuffPost LIVE, Buzzfeed, CBS Sunday Morning and international press as well. I now consider myself a Youtuber and I love to be involved in the Youtube world.

I received this “plaque” (not sure how to call this) when I finished the “build your channel” bootcamp at the Youtube Space in NY. My dream is to keep growing in this platform and one day have the real plaques, the ones you get when you reach 100k subscribers, or even 1 million subscribers, which now seems impossible, but everything seems impossible until it is done, right? I never thought I could have 21k subscribers and now I do!

‘Let’s Move To NY’ wall sticker

DSC06826

Moving to NY has always been my dream. I never thought I was going to actually live here, mostly when after college I moved to Miami to get married and start a new life. Miami is the kind of place where people get very comfortable and never leave. Not me. I was uncomfortably comfortable, if that makes sense. One day, I heard from a friend about a new program at the School of Visual Arts in NY, a masters in Branding. It was exactly what I wanted to do but extremely hard to get in, only 25 people get in a year. I worked harder than ever before and I made it! I got in! The first thing I did when I received the acceptance letter was to buy this sticker to put on my wall as soon as I move to NY. Every time I look at it, it reminds me of my first courageous decision, the decision to pursue my dream.

Away Bigger Carry-On

DSC06797

The best part of my job, which I’m still in shock I get to call what I do, my job, is that I get to travel very often. I’ve been using the same carry-on since I was in college, so I realized it was time for an upgrade. When I heard that two Warby Parker alums created this super cool luggage brand I knew it was for me. I love everything about it, the color, the weight, the size, but my favorite thing is that you get to charge your phone with your carry-on, how freaking cool is that? I now get even more excited to travel because I can’t wait to use my carry-on again and again.

Can Art

DSC06836

I’m originally from Venezuela, and one of the things I’m most proud of as a Venezuelan is the arepa, one of our most delicious national dishes. Every Venezuelan is proud of the arepa. If you haven’t tried one, I suggest you find a Venezuelan restaurant and order one ASAP. We all know how to make them and it doesn’t matter where you are in the world, you will find a bag of our special corn flour in every Venezuelan home.

When my friend, back in Caracas, went to an art fair, she discovered this really cool artist @jotashock who turned every Venezuelan brand into an empty spray paint can. I asked her to buy two for me and it was almost impossible to choose only two! I wanted them all! So I chose the can with the arepa design on it, and what goes better with an arepa than a chocolate milkshake? So I got the Toddy one! They are part of my background on every video so everybody can tell I’m from Venezuela, well, not everybody, but the Venezuelans who are watching.
